Rocky River girls excel at Viking

Saturday was a solid day in the pool for the Rocky River girls swim team at the 43rd Viking High School Invitation­al, one of Northeast Ohio’s top earlyseaso­n meets.

The Pirates finished in sixth place in four events — and had eight 10th-or-better finishes from their swimmers and relays — with sophomore Morgan Schuld turning in the top overall finish with her second-place time in the 500 freestyle inside the Busbey Natatorium on Dec. 9 at Cleveland State.

Among the sixth-place finishers for the Rocky River girls: the 200 medley relay team of Schuld, Katherine Burgess, Anna Skapoulas and Trang Le, which finished in 1:52.23; Burgess in the 200 IM in 2:18.94; Skapoulas in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.32; Schuld in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.79.

Schuld completed the 500 freestyle in 5:16.07, and Mackenzie Schuld took fifth in the same event in 5:24.48.

Also, Burgess was eighth in the 100 breaststro­ke in 1:09.18, and sophomore Mary Claire Flynn took 10th in the 200 IM (2:25.74).

For the Rocky River boys, senior Elijah Linville had a pair of topeight finishes at the meet. He placed fourth in the 100 breaststro­ke in 1:00.11, and took eighth in the 500 freestyle in 5:01.55.

In all, Rocky Rivers swimmers had 10 personal-best times in the finals Saturday evening.

Avon Lake senior Chloe Casterline earned a fourthplac­e finish in the 100 breaststro­ke, finishing in 1:07.49.

Magnificat had a quartet of top-nine finishes, led by Elizabeth Guilfoyle taking seventh in the 500 (5:36.34), Kathryn Pressley finishing eighth in the 200 IM (2:20.87) and ninth in the 100 breaststro­ke (1:09.57), and the 400 freestyle relay placing eighth in 3:47.08.

Marvin Kreis of Fairview took fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:58.63) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (22.48 seconds).
