Sports shorts Wentz believed to have torn ACL

-

Two sources familiar with the injury tell The Associated Press that doctors believe Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has torn his left anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season and playoffs.

Wentz needs an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury.

Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information.

Wentz was hurt late in the third quarter of Philadelphia’s 43-35 comeback win at the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Backup Nick Foles rallied the Eagles to a win that secured the NFC East title.

Wentz was hit hard as he scrambled into the end zone on a play that was called back because of holding. He stayed in the game and threw a 3-yard touchdown pass four plays later to give the Eagles a 31-28 lead.

Foles replaced Wentz the next drive.

Bobby Hurley is no stranger to college basketball lore. So when his Arizona State team travelled to Allen Fieldhouse to face Kansas on Sunday, the former Duke star knew what they were in for.

“No one really wins here,” Hurley said. “You come in here, most of the time you’re not leaving real happy.”

Well, the Sun Devils sure did. Tra Holder scored 29 points on 8-for16 shooting, and No. 16 Arizona State upset No. 2 Kansas 95-85 on Sunday to improve to 9-0.

Shannon Evans II had 22 points, and Remy Martin added 21 for the Sun Devils. Arizona State shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 50.8 percent overall to hand Kansas (7-2) its second straight loss.

The Jayhawks fell to unranked Washington on Wednesday night.

“I didn’t really have to coach a whole lot tonight,” Hurley said. “These guys sitting with me here deserve all the credit.”

After a slow start that forced Hurley to use a timeout less than two minutes into the game, the Sun Devils found themselves down by as much as 13 before making their first field goal. The energy in Allen Fieldhouse was as high as has been all season, as Hurley expected.

Arizona State got back into it, though, trimming the deficit to just three points at halftime and eventually outscoring the Jayhawks, 58-42, in the second half.

Bobby Word and Kenny Carpenter combined to score 36 points and Cleveland State tied a school record by hitting 14 3-pointers en route to a comfortable, 89-56 win over Division II-Notre Dame College on Sunday.

The Vikings launched 39 3-point attempts. Word led the barrage, hitting 4 of 13 from distance.

Shawn Christian, who hit 3 of 6 attempts from deep, and Carpenter, who was 2 of 6, were the only other players to convert more than a single trey.

Cleveland State (3-6) shot 33 of 69 from the field and forced 30 turnovers, turning them into 32 points. Word finished with 19 points while Carpenter added 17 and grabbed eight boards. Tyree Appleby added 12 points and collected four of the Vikings’ 19 steals.

Notre Dame College got 23 points from Halil Parks, who hit 4 of 9 from behind the 3-point arc.
