Browns shut out of Pro Bowl

-

No Joe Thomas means no Pro Bowl players for the Browns this year.

Middle linebacker Joe Schobert was selected as a first alternate and Joel Bitonio as a second alternate at guard for the game on Jan. 28 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

As first alternate, Schobert will likely end up on the AFC team as a replacement for Ryan Shazier of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Shazier was one of eight Steelers voted to the Pro Bowl, but he suffered a season-ending spinal injury in a game with the Bengals earlier this month and won’t play in football’s version of an All-Star game.

Thomas made the Pro Bowl each of his first 10 years in the NFL. He suffered a season-ending triceps injury while the Browns were playing the Titans in the seventh game of the season.

NFL PACKERS SHUT DOWN RODGERS »

Aaron Rodgers is done for the season.

The Green Bay Packers put their star quarterback on injured reserve Tuesday, a day after they were eliminated from playoff contention.

Rodgers missed seven games after breaking his right collarbone Oct. 15 against Minnesota. He returned on Sunday, but the Packers lost 3124 at Carolina. Atlanta’s win against Tampa Bay on Monday night ended Green Bay’s eight-year run of consecutive postseason berths.

Brett Hundley will get the start for Green Bay in Saturday’s home game against the Vikings. Joe Callahan was signed as his backup.

STEELERS PILE UP PROBOWLERS »

The Pittsburgh Steelers lead the NFL in one category this season: most Pro Bowl players.

Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell and Ben Roethlisberger are among eight Steelers selected for the all-star game. They will be joined on Jan. 28 in Orlando, Florida, by tackle Alejandro Villanueva, guard David DeCastro, center Maurkice Pouncey, kicker Chris Boswell, and linebacker Ryan Shazier, who is injured. Brown, also injured but expected back for the playoffs, was voted a starter, as were Bell and the three offensive linemen.

The Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints each placed six players in the game in balloting announced Tuesday.

Four rookies were chosen in voting by NFL players, coaches and fans: running backs Alvin Kamara of the Saints and Kareem Hunt of the Chiefs, cornerback Marshon Lattimore of the Saints, and safety Budda Baker of the Cardinals as a special teamer.

College basketball OHIO STATE HAMMERS THE CITADEL »

Kam Williams and Keita Bates-Diop each scored 17 points as Ohio State won its fifth straight game with a 94-65 win over The Citadel.

C.J. Jackson added 13 points and Andrew Dakich 10 for the Buckeyes (10-3).

Kaiden Rice had 14 points, and Alex Reed and Zane Najdawi added 11 apiece for the Bulldogs (5-7).

Ohio State led, 44-23, at the half and built the margin to 39 at 88-49 with five minutes left.

The Bulldogs were 12th in the nation in scoring at 89.3 points per game but much of that is predicated on getting points from their press and hitting shots.
