- By Keith Reynolds

An Oberlin man was indicted on felonious assault charges Dec. 22 after police say he beat up his mother and sister in November.

Ryan W. Bell Jr., 22, was indicted by a Lorain County grand jury on four counts of felonious assault and two counts of domestic violence after his case was bound over from Elyria Municipal Court.

According to an Elyria police report, on Nov. 21 Bell was at his mother’s house in the 300 block of Furnace Street looking for his backpack, but was unable to find it.

His 40-year-old mother and 24-year-old sister told police Bell was already in a bad mood when he got to the home, and when he was unable to find the bag, he began to yell and throw things around the home, according to the report.

The report went on to say:

Bell grabbed a flower vase and threw it at his mother, striking her in the right side of the head, causing a “bad” injury. His sister tried to calm Bell and have him leave so she could tender aid to her mother, but Bell grabbed a dining room chair and struck his sister all over her body.

Bell then punched his sister in the face several times, causing injuries to her nose and face. He then left the home for another house in the 300 block of Furnace Street.

When officers arrived, both victims had “bad injuries to the head and face area and they were crying and very upset,” the report said.

Officers arrested Bell at the other Furnace Avenue house. He told officers he was attacked by the two victims and was only trying to defend himself. The officers did not observe any injuries to Bell, the report said.

Bell is currently being held at the Lorain County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Bell will be arraigned in Lorain County Common Pleas Court on Dec. 28.
