State trooper allegedly assaulted responding to call for service
A trooper assigned to the Elyria Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol was assaulted while responding to a call for service the morning of Jan. 11, according to a news release.
At 7:16 a.m. Jan. 11, the trooper was called to check the welfare of a pedestrian reportedly walking in the roadway on Diagonal Road near Whitehead Road, according to the news release from the patrol.
The trooper located the pedestrian on Diagonal Road near Biggs Road, just outside the village of LaGrange.
The trooper made contact with the pedestrian, and he was confrontational and began to attack the trooper by striking the trooper in the face, according to the release.
The struggle continued for several minutes until additional officers could respond and help the trooper take the suspect into custody, the release said.
Cornelious L. Carey Jr., 44, of Elyria, was charged with felonious assault and incarcerated at the Lorain County Jail, according to the release.
The trooper, whose name is being withheld, was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-lifethreatening injuries, the release said.
According to Elyria Municipal Court records, Carey is accused of biting off a portion of the trooper’s ear. The records say the trooper was awaiting immediate surgery.
The court also ordered Carey to undergo a full blood screening. He will appear again in court for a pre-trial hearing on Jan. 22.
The LaGrange Police Department, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and LaGrange Fire and EMS provided assistance.
The incident remains under investigation.
