Police: Vehicle in car fire linked to shooting

An early morning car fire broke out on Jan. 12 involving a vehicle connected with a shooting that took place on Jan. 4 at an address in the 1400 block of Reid Avenue in Lorain, according to police.

On Jan. 12 at about 6 a.m., Lorain police responded to a residence in the 1000 block of East 34th Street following reports of a loud explosion somewhere in the 23002400 block of Apple Avenue.

Upon arriving on scene, officers found a 2003 Ford Expedition parked in front of a residence in the 2400 block of Apple Avenue fully engulfed in fire.

The Lorain Fire Department had already been called and was able to quickly extinguish the fire.

The car was parked on Apple Avenue since Jan. 11 due to electrical problems, and the vehicle was recently towed as a result of it being involved in a shooting and was under investigat­ion by the Lorain Police Detective Bureau, the report said. In reviewing the vehicle’s history from the license plate, the vehicle is connected with a shooting that took place at an address in the 1400 block of Reid Avenue.

According to the report, the victim, a 46-year-old Lorain woman, said she had recently moved to the area and did not have any known problems with anyone.

It is unknown if arson played a factor in the incident.

According to court records, at 3:26 a.m. on Jan. 4, officers were called to a residence in the 1400 block of Reid Avenue following reports of multiple gunshots.

Officers observed multiple cars leaving the area along with one refusing to stop as they attempted it pull it over, the records said. Numerous shell casings were discovered outside near the east side of the building in addition to two blood trails.

When officers were investigat­ing the shooting, they received a call about a gunshot victim at Mercy Health Medical Center’s emergency room, the records said. While attempting to interview the victim, police received another call for a male with a gunshot wound to the chest, within a block of the Reid Avenue building, court records said.

The building is believed to be the headquarte­rs of a motorcycle club.

No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
