Charleston Coffee House reopens
The Charleston Coffee House will reopen its doors with new management at 630 Broadway in Lorain.
The coffee house has earned praise for the renovations inside to create a welcoming gathering place on Broadway.
But owner Gary Davis acknowledged it has opened and reopened in recent years.
Now, Davis hopes the community will support the shop “with the focus on the basics” in mornings and afternoons until it can develop into a beer and wine bar open later in the day.
“As the business picks up, we’ll re-evaluate our hours and menu,” Davis said.
He said he supports efforts to build a resurgence for downtown Lorain.
“The coffee house is a key player in the future of our downtown,” Davis said.
“We’re seeing some positive activity with the developments surrounding the Spitzer Building and several important property sales on Broadway.”
He is referring to the Broadway Building that for years served as the Spitzer Plaza Hotel.
“We can feel something
‘brewing’ and it looks very positive,” Davis said.
The shop will be open 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays, and 7 a.m. to noon, Saturdays.
The attached banquet space is “getting busier all the time,” Davis said.
The space in 2016 supported the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign headquarters and has hosted a number of other events over the years, said Ron Baldwin, property manager for the site.
“Our complex has a lot to offer our community,” Baldwin said. “When things start happening downtown, we’ll be here as an integral fixture.”
Along with the coffee house, Davis has the Gardens
of Charleston condominiums and apartments at 610 Broadway and the BRIAR, which is the Black River Innovate Artist Residence at 668 Broadway.
In November 2017, Davis launched the Lorain Waterfront Business District initiative to unite business and property owners along the Black River and Lake Erie.
The group is free to join. It has a monthly newsletter and meetings are the second Thursday of the month at the Charleston Coffee House.
