Sports shorts Sister of North Korean leader to come to South for Olympics

-

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, an increasingly prominent figure in the country’s leadership, will be part of the North’s delegation to the South Korean Winter Olympics, officials said Wednesday.

Kim Yo Jong, believed to be in her late 20s or early 30s, would be the first member of North Korea’s ruling family to visit South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. Analysts say her inclusion in the Olympic delegation shows North Korea’s ambition to use the Olympics to break out from diplomatic isolation by improving relations with the South, which it could use as a bridge for approaching the United States.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry said North Korea informed it that Kim Yo Jong, first vice director of the Central Committee of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, would be part of the delegation led by the country’s nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Kim Yo Jong will meet with South Korean President Moon Jaein, a liberal who has expressed a desire to reach out to the North.

North Korea said the delegation will also include Choe Hwi, chairman of the country’s National Sports Guidance Committee, and Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the North’s agency that deals with inter-Korean affairs.

Federal authorities have filed a new immigration charge against a Guatemalan man who has twice been deported from the U.S. and is now suspected in a drunken-driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and another man.

U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler announced the immigration charge late Tuesday, ahead of an expected announcement by Marion County prosecutors on Wednesday on possible charges against Manuel Orrego-Savala for the crash early Sunday in Indianapolis.

Orrego-Savala, 37, was arrested following the crash along Interstate 70. Investigators said Jackson, 26, and his Uber driver, 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, were standing outside Monroe’s car when they were struck and killed by a pickup truck driven by OrregoSavala.

He was charged in Tuesday’s federal criminal complaint with illegal re-entry of a previously deported alien. He faces up to 10 years in prison on the immigration charge, which the U.S. attorney’s office said would be handled after any state charges are resolved.

Devon Hall scored 17 points, Ty Jerome added 15 and No. 2 Virginia rallied in the second half to beat Florida State, 59-55, on Wednesday night.

Kyle Guy scored 10 of his 13 points in the final 20 minutes as the Cavaliers fought back from a 32-22 halftime deficit to remain unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia was 5 of 10 on 3-pointers in the second half and committed just one turnover.

Virginia (23-1) is the third team since 200001 to win its first 12 ACC games, joining North Carolina (2000-01) and Miami (2012-13). It is the Cavaliers’ best conference start since they were 12-0 in 1980-81.
