Michigan State must right horrible wrong

-

I read the Jan. 31 New York Times editorial “It’s Time for Michigan State to Clean House” and I have to respond, as I used to be a proud MSU graduate, Class of 1970. (Editor’s note: the editorial appeared on Page A4 of the Morning Journal on Feb. 5).

It is so embarrassing when your alma mater, which you love dearly, is involved with this evil, sick, disgusting man, the former doctor Larry Nassar. The very fact that he worked there and got away with his atrocities for decades is sickening.

I had hoped with all my heart that my school would step up and do the right thing.

But, instead, I am so disgusted with Michigan State University over the appointment of former Gov. John Engler as interim president that I cannot even wear my MSU Nurse pin any longer, or bear to watch the basketball team I have followed for so many years.

I am proud that the current students are protesting loudly, as this is a travesty.

I totally agree with all that was said in the New York Times editorial, and I believe that I am not alone among the alumni of this once-great university.

I want anyone who was involved with or knew about Nassar’s activities to be prosecuted and punished. And no one who had any knowledge of his acts should have a position of any kind at MSU or in the Olympic Gymnastics family. Hopefully in the future, girls and women will be believed by those they tell about the horrors they endured.

I hope that the university I have loved for most of my life will weather this storm by taking all the appropriate steps to make sure nothing like this ever happens again and returns to being a school we alumni can be proud of and revere.

I will remain embarrassed to be a Spartan until they start to do things correctly to right this horrible wrong.

I urge any other alumni who agree with me to stop sending donations to Michigan State University and let them know, in no uncertain terms, that we do not support them until they step up and clean house and take charge of making all the necessary changes to restore MSU to its former position of greatness.
