Bay girls win D-II sectional crown

It was a banner day for the Bay girls at the Division II Akron sectional swim meet, as the Rockets claimed the team title, besting second-place Akron Hoban, 278-221, and automatically qualifying three relays and three individuals to the district meet next week in the process.
In all, Morning Journal area teams automatically qualified six individuals and four relays to the district meet at Cleveland State on Feb. 16.
The top two individuals and relays in each event earned automatic berths.
The next fastest 26 individuals and 16 relays from sectional meets across the district will also advance to the district meet.
For Bay sophomore Maja Miedza, no waiting will be necessary. Miedza won the 50 freestyle (24.71) and took second in the 100 freestyle (55.76) to qualify as an individual. She also teamed with Gabby Mastromatteo, Jacqueline Melaragno and Paige Thompson for a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:58.67) and joined Mastromatteo, Kelsey Reid and Kolby Johnston to place second in the 200 free relay (1:44.01).
Kayla Skurski (second, 100 backstroke, 1:01.01) and Melaragno (second, 500 freestyle, 5:35.16) join Miedza as the other Bay girls automatic qualifiers, while the Rockets’ 400 freestyle relay of Thompson, Deborah Garner, Melaragno and Logan Thompson placed second (3:57.05) to punch their ticket.
On the boys side, Rocky River placed second as a team with 271 points, trailing only Canfield (302).
The Pirates automatically qualified the 200 medley relay of Harrison Shaw, Elijah Linville, Garrett Morris and Aiden Morris (first, 1:44.62), with Linville also winning the 200 IM (2:03.30) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.01) to advance to the district meet.
Joining the Pirates’ contingent with automatic qualifications were Bay’s Colin MacMIllan (first, 50 freestyle, 21.62l; first, 100 freestyle, 52.32) and Fairview’s Marvin Kreis (first, 200 freestyle, 1:46.02; second, 100 freestyle, 47.89).

• Elyria Catholic: Jamie Wells (fourth, 50 freestyle,
22.75), Kaylee Judy (fifth, 100 butterfly, 1:04.01), Logan Hayward (fifth, 100 freestyle, 58.38) and the girls 200 freestyle relay (fifth, 1:48.41).
• Fairview: girls 200 medley relay (fourth, 2:03.13)
• Rocky River: boys 200 freestyle relay (third, 1:33.22)
