Nord Center’s Sexual Assault Services seeking volunteers

- Staff report

The Nord Center’s Sexual Assault Services, SAS, currently is accepting applications for volunteer advocates for the spring training session, according to a news release.

The sessions will take place from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. on Saturdays from March 10- April 7 at The Nord Center, 6140 S. Broadway Ave. in Lorain.

Volunteer opportunities are available from serving as a victim advocate to community outreach, the release said.

Volunteers play a vital role in providing essential services to those affected by sexual violence and to those who support them, according to the release.

“Volunteers are an essential part of our team,” said Becky Opel, director of sexual assault services at The Nord Center. “We wouldn’t be able to provide all the services we do without them.”

No prior training or experience is necessary other than a desire to help those in crisis, the release said.

All applicants will be screened and required to complete a 40-hour specialized training program.

Bilingual/Spanishspeaking volunteers are in need to assist in outreach and advocacy to the Hispanic population, the release said.

The SAS volunteer advocate training is a registered training program of the Ohio Advocate Network.

It ensures programs provide quality advocacy and supportive services to those victimized by crime with the establishment of uniform minimum standards for pre-service training and continuing education, the release said.

The Nord Center’s Sexual Assault Services provides counseling, advocacy and support to survivors of sexual assault.

Its purpose is to help them begin the healing process and navigate the legal system, according to the release.

Many clients are seen soon after the assault, while others wait days, weeks or even years to seek support, the release said.

It is only through the dedication and commitment of volunteers that The Nord Center can serve so many, according to the release.
