Upgrades coming to Lions Community Center
Avon is in the process of upgrading the Avon Lions Community Center.
Located across the street from Northgate Park at 2155 Eaton Drive, the facility is undergoing a complete interior remodeling project with new flooring, interior framing, a ceiling and electrical work.
Mayor Bryan Jensen said the $70,000 project is ongoing with an expected completion date in March. The hope is to provide a completely new look to the structure with a wider range of uses for the building.
“It will probably be every bit as nice as Avon Isle. It will be a different look inside. We think we can probably rent it twice a night,” he said. “We’d like a little business area (where) they could have business meetings and that and we’ve already had some community outreach to us.”
The city has applied for a grant from the state, and Jensen would like to explore adding an exterior bathroom to the facility if the application is successful.
The need for renovating the building was discovered in 2017 after the city purchased some wood for the ceiling and discovered some problems in addition to issues with the ventilation and electrical.
“The ceiling was the beginning of it. Once we got the ceiling out of there, we found that the electrical was not up to code, so we’ve kind of been on a bit of a roller coaster ride. And when it’s all said and done, it’s really to give a face-lift. I think people will want to rent it out. It’s going to be a really nice facility,” Service Director Mike Farmer said..
Originally constructed around 1950, the building underwent some remodeling in 1991 with the addition of kitchens and bathrooms. The roof was replaced in 2011.
The city will hold a grand re-opening ceremony when the renovations are completed.
