Elyria man dies after crash

- By Zachary Srnis

A man involved in the single-car crash March 11 has died, according to North Ridgeville police Capt. Marti Garrow.

“The man, identified as Gordon Willis, 68, of Elyria, was traveling west on (Route) 10 and drove onto the exit ramp leading to Route 83,” Garrow said. “Unfortunately, he continued through the stop sign and continued straight into a ditch.”

The incident happened at 3:44 p.m. Garrow said the current theory is a medical condition caused the crash, but there is no way to be sure at this time.

“We will have to wait for the results by the Cuyahoga County (Medical Examiner’s) Office, and that could take some time,” he said.

Willis was seen swerving even before he ran the stop sign, Garrow said.

“It could have been anything from lack of sleep or possibly drug and alcohol involvement,” he said. “It is something that could continue pending autopsy.”

Willis’ daughter, Jessica Willis, later stated that he was diabetic and she is sure that was the cause.
