Veterans’ Memorial Park to receive $50,000 grant

- By Kevin Martin

The city of Avon Lake will receive $50,000 in grant funding from the state of Ohio for Veterans’ Memorial Park.

Mayor Greg Zilka announced on March 5 at the city’s Collective Committee Meeting that State Rep. Nathan Manning told him Avon Lake would receive funding to construct a pavilion or gazebo at the park located at 32756 Lake Road.

Zilka said the city would most likely receive the funding by mid-summer and can begin the process of evaluating potential options.

“That will be a big help to us to complete our project along Veterans’ Park to make it effective and usable,” he said. “We’re very pleased that the state legislature has considered our request.”

Zilka added the city hopes to add a monument or other mementos to mark bicentennial celebrations to begin in July.

“We hope to make it something that’s not just functional but a real architectural statement so that it would be attractive for people to perhaps be married there and have their wedding reception at the Lake House.”
