Despite the cool temperature, the citizens of Avon along with Mayor Bryan Jensen took kids around the Story Walk to demonstrate a new way to read a children’s book.

The April 14 event, called the Inaugural Story Time, was presented by the Lorain Public Library System Avon Branch Library and also doubled as an opening for the Every Child’s Playground, at 36265 Detroit Road, with local vendors in attendance as well.

“The day is a great one that brings the community together,” said Pam Fechter, planning coordinator for the city of Avon. “We have a great space here for everyone to enjoy and we want to optimize the area as much as possible. This event gives us a way to showcase that, even if the weather is not how we originally envisioned.”

Fechter said the Story Times are designed to get more kids to read.

“They combine the need for kids to read while also promoting going outdoors and enjoying the outside,” she said. “The Story Times feature a children’s book aligned with a seasonal theme and each page of the book is revealed as you

continue down the trail. It’s a neat way to keep kids motivated and the LPLS Avon Branch will be supplying different books for two Fridays every month from now through October.”

Fechter said the park also features another trail that is focused on the history of Avon.

“The trail will take you through the rich history of the city and provide information

you might not know,” she said. “Ultimately, I feel the space will be used frequently by members of the community, and that is validated by the good turnout we had despite the cold day.”

Fechter said the Every Child’s Playground was a communal project.

“We had people donate a to the project, because there was a recognition of the need for a space like this in the city,” she said. “We have certain equipment donated and even a decorative totem pole made by a local resident.

It’s a playground that works for kids of any level.”

Jensen feels the playground compliments the area nicely.

“We needed to add more parking for the pool area,” he said. “We then decided we needed something over here the community as a whole could enjoy; not just those who are pool members. I feel the playground adds another element to the area and we now have something for everyone here included with the walking trails and the pool.”
