The Nord Center is organizing a creative project to raise awareness for sexual violence, according a news release.

The Clothesline Project, organized by The Nord Center’s Sexual Assault Services, is a visual display of art created on T-shirts by survivors of sexual assault/abuse and their families, the release said.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Clothesline Project will be on display during April at various locations in Lorain County, the release said.

“The Clothesline Project gives survivors an opportunity to express themselves,” said Rebecca Opel, sexual assault services coordinator. “For man, it’s an important step in their healing process.”

The display also depicts the reality that violence is a problem everywhere, even in Lorain County.

According to Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, also known as RAINN, an American is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds.

In 2017, The Nord Center Sexual Assault Services saw 949 clients, 352 of whom were younger than the age of 18, according to the release.

On average, the Nord Center sees 79 clients each month, the release said.

The Clothesline Project appeared previously was on display at Lorain County Community College and will be on display at the following locations in April:

• April 16-17: Oberlin College – Science Center, 119 Woodland St., and the Conservatory, 77 W. College St.

• April 18-20: The Nord Center, 6140 Broadway in Lorain – in the first floor hallway

• April 23-27: Amherst Steele High School, 450 Washington St.

The Clothesline Project is based on the idea that in the past, laundry was considered women’s work and women would sometimes confide in each other as they hung their clothes outside to dry.

It was launched in 1990 by a coalition of women’s groups in Cape Cod, Mass., as a way of raising awareness about the statistics associated with sexual assault and sexual violence, according to the release.
