Browns sign QB Stave for camp depth

- By Jeff Schudel

The Browns announced signing quarterback Joel Stave and waiving three players from the roster April 30.

Stave, signed by the Vikings as an undrafted rookie in 2016, has spent time on the practice squads in Minnesota (2016), Seattle (2016), Kansas City (2016) plus Washington (2017) and the New York Jets (2017). He finished his college career as Wisconsin’s all-time winningest quarterback, with a 31-10 record as a starter. He ranked second in school history in passing yards (7,635) and touchdowns (48).

Stave joins Tyrod Taylor, Drew Stanton and first overall draft pick Baker Mayfield in the quarterback room.

Teams generally prefer having four quarterbacks on the roster for minicamps and training camp so the quarterbacks expected to make the final roster don’t get arm weary. The Browns three-day rookie minicamp, closed to the public, begins May 4 in Berea.

Wide receivers Matt Hazel and Kasen Williams plus defensive back Kai Nacua were waived.

In addition, the Browns have reportedly signed the following undrafted rookies, according to social media and various websites. The team has not announced these signings:

• offensive tackle Desmond Harrison, West Georgia

• safety Evan Berry, Tennessee

• defensive back Montrel Meander, Grambling

• wide receiver Da’Mari Scott, Fresno State

• offensive lineman Erick Wren, Oklahoma

• safety Elijah Campbell, Northern Iowa

• safety Micah Hammemann, BYU

• defensive tackle Zaycoven Henderson, Texas A&M

• defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale, Washington State

• defensive tackle Trenton Thompson, Georgia

• linebacker D.J. Calhoun, Arizona State

• offensive lineman Christian DiLauro, Illinois
