Area studentathletes honored
Ohio Wesleyan University honored its outstanding 2017-18 student-athletes at the 14th annual Dale J. Bruce Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner.
The celebration, held April 19, recognized Battling Bishop athletes from Ohio Wesleyan’s 23 varsity sports for their academic and athletic successes.
Local award recipients were:
• Erin Cannon of Avon, earned the Top 50 Academic Award. Cannon competed in Battling Bishop Volleyball.
• Will Sharer Jr. of Avon, earned the Top 50 Academic Award. Sharer Jr. competed in Battling Bishop Men’s Soccer.
• Michael Smosny Jr. of Elyria, earned the Top 50 Academic Award. Smosny Jr. competed in Battling Bishop Football.
• Austin Strayer of Willard, earned the Top 50 Academic Award. Strayer competed in Battling Bishop Men’s Swimming & Diving.
Students honored at Ashland
Ashland University recognizes the following students for winning Departmental Awards at the Academic Honors Convocation in the Jack & Deb Miller Chapel on April 22. They included: • Keeleigh Myers of Sandusky received the Senior award for the Department of Art. Myers is majoring in fine arts. She is the daughter of Tana Myers of Sandusky. Myers is a 2014 graduate of St. Mary’s Central Catholic High School.
• Nathan Ahrens of Avon received the Junior award for the Department of Computer Science. Ahrens is majoring in computer science. Ahrens is a 2015 graduate of Christian Liberty Academy Satl.
• Nathan Weltlin of Plymouth received the Senior award for the Department of Criminal Justice. Weltlin is majoring in criminal justice. Weltlin is a 2015 graduate of Plymouth High School.
• Jenna Shepherd of New London received the Junior award for the Department of Foreign Languages. Shepherd is majoring in French. Shepherd is a 2015 graduate of Ashland High School.
• Kelly Luck of North Olmsted received the Sophomore award for the Department of Mathematics. Luck is majoring in integrated mathematics. Luck is a 2016 graduate of North Olmsted High School.
• Jessica Dupee of Wellington received the Senior award for the Department of Theatre. Dupee is majoring in theatre. Dupee is a 2014 graduate of Wellington Sr. High School.
• Amy Lauer of Elyria received the Senior award for the Department of Teacher Education: Intervention Specialist. Lauer is majoring in intervention specialist education.
The Departmental Awards are given to one sophomore, one junior and one senior from each department at the Academic Honors Convocation.
The criteria for the awards by Department are scholarly achievement, completion of at least 30 credit hours over two semesters at Ashland University, and a GPA of 3.25 or above.
