Students from the area were among over 60 students recognized at the Honors Award Ceremony during Baldwin Wallace University’s Ovation Festival 2018, BW’s annual celebration of student achievement. The following local students received recognition:
• Elizabeth Reed of Avon Lake, a religion major, received the Dr. Ernest Knautz Award. The award honors the late professor emeritus Dr. Ernest Knautz. The award was established by his many friends and former students to honor his 42 years of service to Christian education as Navy V-12 Chaplain, head of BW’s department of religion from 1941-1958 and as minister of Avon United Methodist Church.
• Jeffrey Farkas-Ondo of Elyria, a graduate of Midview High School majoring in sport management, received the David R. & June Demmerle Scholarship. David Demmerle taught and coached at BW for over 35 years in the division of health & physical education. June taught in the American Language Academy. Their commitment to education and coaching is reflected in this scholarship to encourage students to make a positive influence on the teaching/coaching profession. The scholarship is given to a junior health, physical education and sport sciences major who has the potential to make a positive influence on the teaching/ coaching profession.
•Leandra Patton of Lorain, a graduate of Elyria Catholic High School majoring in creative writing and French, received the A.B. & Georgianna Bonds Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in one of the humanities in recognition of academic excellence, as well as encompassing the same characteristics as Alfred and Georgianna Bonds who were influential to the BW community during their time on campus.
• Dylan Cook of Lorain, a graduate of Lorain County Early College High School majoring in English, received the Outstanding Senior Award. Outstanding seniors are nominated by faculty, staff and students for their contributions to the university community in academics, leadership, service and character.
• Christen Ford of Lorain, a graduate of Midview High School majoring in computer science, received the Outstanding Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Award. The award is given to the outstanding graduating senior in the computer science program. Students are selected on the basis of performance in and out of the classroom as well as demonstrated ability in computer science.
• Christopher Dreger of North Olmsted, a graduate of North Olmsted High School majoring in English and Spanish, received the
• Ruby Redinger Prize in English. The prize is awarded to the senior student who achieves the highest grade point average in English in honor of BW professor of English literature Ruby Redinger who is remembered for her unusual effectiveness in stimulating creative writing skills among her students.
• Leah Varner of Oberlin, a graduate of Clearview High School majoring in accounting and business administration, received the Adult Senior Academic Award. The award is presented to the top three prospective graduates in the Adult, Transfer and Military Services undergraduate program. The award is based on cumulative GPA and the recipient must have completed at least 45 credit hours at BW.
• Samantha Dean of Vermilion, a graduate of Vermilion High School majoring in French and international studies, received the Dr. William D. and Mary Pendell Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is presented to a student proficient in the study of French who hopes to study abroad.
• Joseph Rini of Vermilion, a graduate of Vermilion High School majoring in film studies, received the Will Richmond Prize in Photography. The prize was established by family and friends of Will Richmond and is given as a lasting tribute to honor a talented professional and valued friend.
• Shelby Helmick of Wellington, a neuroscience psychology and psychology major, received the Dr. Delo C. Grover Award. The award honors the services of Dr. Grover to Baldwin Wallace University. The fund was established by his friends and is given to an academically talented student majoring in psychology or philosophy.
•Meghan Jenkins of Bay Village, a graduate of Lakewood High School majoring in accounting, received the Adult Senior Academic Award. The award is presented to the top three prospective graduates in the Adult, Transfer and Military Services undergraduate program. The award is based on cumulative GPA and the recipient must have completed at least 45 credit hours at BW.
• Samantha Illius of Westlake, a graduate of Westlake High School majoring in creative writing and theatre acting and directing, received the Lillian and Larry D. Bibbee Scholarship. The scholarship was established to acknowledge deserving students who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship in the classroom, a keen interest in independent research beyond that required by the professor, and an active involvement in the University community.
