Lesnar-UFC rumors heat up

- By Mark Podolski

If this rumor is true, the upcoming Stipe MiocicDaniel Cormier super fight just got that much more interesting.

According to the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, WWE heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is “under discussion” to fight the winner of the MiocicCormier bout, set as the main event on July 7 in Las Vegas at UFC 226.

Miocic (18-2), an Eastlake North graduate, puts his heavyweight championship belt on the line against Cormier, the light heavyweight champ who’s 20-1.

Lesnar is reportedly still under contract with the WWE, but it’s believed that contract is expiring soon. UFC president Dana White said on April 5, “Brock Lesnar’s coming back. I don’t know when, but yes he is.”

This is what Meltzer wrote about the Lesnar’s return to the UFC, which has not officially been announced:

“Lesnar has been asked to face the winner of the (July 7) Stipe Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier fight for the heavyweight title, which from a sports standpoint is ridiculous given that Lesnar hasn’t had a true UFC win since Shane Carwin in 2010 (his 2016 win over Mark Hunt was changed to a no contest when he tested positive for Clomiphene).

“But that would also be a money fight. As noted before, it’s going down to the wire. The idea for that fight is on (Dec. 30) in Las Vegas, which means Lesnar needs to put himself back in the USADA testing pool by (June 30). If he does, it would not be a surprise for Lesnar to show up at the UFC 226 show. I can tell you that while that is not decided on, it is something under discussion for him to show up and challenge WWE’s Brock Lesnar is expected to return to the UFC.

the winner or them at least tease that.”

If Lesnar is in attendance at UFC 226, it will without question create a buzz inside T-Mobile Arena before and after the Miocic-Cormier super fight.

Miocic said this to The News-Herald in May about the possibility of fighting Lesnar one day:

“I’m not worried about (Lesnar). I’m worried about Cormier. That’s all I care about.”

Cormier is moving up a weight class and recently said he expects to be in the

230-pound range for his fight against Miocic. He’s 5-foot-11 while Miocic is 6-4, and usually weighs in for fights between 240 and 245 pounds.

If Miocic defeats Cormier, the buzz for a MiocicLesnar super fight would likely be the biggest of Miocic’s career, and present him with his biggest payday ever.

Lesnar’s inactivity in the octagon could be an issue. He last fought in the UFC in 2016, when he defeated Hunt at UFC 200, and reportedly earned $2.5 million.

Days after that bout, Lesnar tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, and returned to the WWE.
