City rallies for family homeless from fire

Fire leaves young mother, two children homeless

- By Kevin Martin

The Lorain community is rallying to help a family impacted by a June 17 house fire.

The blaze that left a young mother and her two children ages 1 and 10 homeless caught the attention of Lorain Council-at-Large member Mary Springowski.

In a Facebook post June 18, Springowski asked the community for clothing donations: sizes: 24 months; 16/18 in pants girls; 16/18 shirts girls; medium shirt and size 1 in pants juniors/ women

Donations can be dropped off at 2215 Lorain Drive in Lorain.

Springowski said after someone reached out to her on behalf of the family, she was more than willing help spread the word through social media with many peo-

ple already showing their generosity and coming forward with donations.

“What I have noticed is that it is people who have very little themselves that are really going above and beyond to help out. There is a tremendous compassion

in this city and when there is a need, the residents of Lorain can always be counted on to step up to meet that need,” Springowski wrote in a statement to The Morning Journal.

At 10:28 a.m., the Lorain Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2000 block of Oberlin Avenue.

Fire Capt. Frank Griffith said the blaze began in a back bedroom and firefighters were able to get the main body of the fire under control in about 10 minutes.

Two adult occupants, a male and a female, were inside the residence when the fire broke out.

Griffith said the male suffered from smoke inhalation, but was treated and released on scene.

A family cat died, and there were no other injuries, Griffith said.

The dwelling had exterior damage on the south and west sides of the building along with smoke damage throughout.

The fire remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the occupants of the residence.
