The Cavaliers have signed former high school star Billy Preston, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

Preston a 6-foot-10, 220-pound power forward, who was supposed to play at Kansas but never did, was not selected in the tworound NBA draft June 21.

The Cavaliers have not announced any post-draft signings.

Preston attended four different schools during his high school years — John Bosco, Redondo Union, Prime Prep Academy and lastly Oak Hill Academy.

He was supposed to play at Kansas as a five-star recruit, but according to a report was involved in a car accident that involved an investigation into Preston’s finances.

The result was Preston never played a regular season game for the Jayhawks. Instead, he signed with Igokea Laktaši of the ABA League and Bosnian League, but a shoulder injury restricted him to playing in only three games.

“The talent and upside is undeniably present,” a predraft scouting report at thesixersense.com concluded. “He’s an impressive athlete at 6-10, boasting smooth handles and ample explosiveness. He’s a dynamic scorer who will create mismatches, something that should draw the interest of NBA teams.”

Preston is expected to play for the Cavaliers in the Summer League and, if he makes a positive impression, begin his career with the Cavs by playing for the Canton Charge.
