Blas Garza, 88, of Sheffield Lake, passed away Thursday June 28, 2018 while surrounded by his loving family afillness. ter a 1 ½ year

He was born February 20, 1930 in Larof edo, Texas and had been a resident Sheffield Lake for more than 50 years.

Blas was a welder for 40 years and a hard-working man who enjoyed a long career in the workAmeriC­omretired force for various employers. He was employed at the can Ship Yard in Lorain, Ohio for 3 years, Thew Shovel pany for 13 years, U.S. Steel for 7 years and finally from the U.S. Gypsum Plant after 10 years in 1994. After retirement, Blas occupied his time by working at St. Raphael Church in Bay Village for 15 years. He also enjoyed various leisure activities such as golfing, cooking, gardening, fishing, and attending church. He was a member of St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Sheffield Lake.

Survivors include daughters, Laura Garza of Sheffield Lake, Linda (Sam) Lute of Lake Orion, Michigan and Lydia (Marty) Janis of Lorain; grandchild­ren: Michael (Christina) Yurkonis, Samuel J. Lute, Sabrina Hartenfeld, Elizabeth Janis, Hannah Lute, Katelyn Janis and Conner Kinter; great grandchild­ren: Ariana Yurkonis, Hayden Lingross and Addalyn Yurkonis and sister Ofelia Shottenkir­k of San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Garza (nee Plasencia) in 1998 and daughter Lisa Garza in 2010.

The family will receive friends Monday July 2, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Additional viewing will be held Tuesday July 3 from 9:30 am until the time of the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 521 Harris Rd, Sheffield Lake. The Rev. Stephen Shields, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where military honors will be conducted by AMVETS Post #32 of Elyria.
