Durant staying with Warriors with 2-year deal

-

Kevin Durant is staying with the NBA champions.

Durant has decided to sign a two-year deal with the Golden State Warriors, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday because the deal cannot become official until the league’s offseason moratorium ends on Friday. The deal comes with a player option for 2019-20, so Durant can and likely will become a free agent again next summer.

It’s a win on multiple levels for the twotime defending NBA champion Warriors. Not only do they get to keep the 2017 and 2018 NBA Finals MVP, but they also get some financial flexibility in the deal.

Durant will be paid about $30.5 million this coming season, about $5 million less than he could have commanded if the deal was structured differently. That savings will give Golden State options for other moves this summer, as the Warriors look to bolster their bench for a run at what could be a fourth title in a fiveyear span.

The New York Times first reported Durant’s intention to sign the deal.

GREEN STAYING WITH RED

WINGS » Mike Green is staying with the Detroit Red Wings on a $10.75 million, two-year contract.

A person with direct knowledge of the move told The Associated Press that the Red Wings agreed to terms with the 32-year-old defenseman on the new deal that counts $5.375 million against the salary cap each of the next two seasons. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the deal had not been announced.

Green was considered one of the top pending free agent blue liners available after former Washington teammate John Carlson re-signed with the Capitals for $64 million over eight years. He put up eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 66 games before his season was cut short by a neck injury.

Seven of Green’s eight goals came on the power play, where he’s a stabilizing force for Detroit. DUCKS ACQUIRE DE LEO

The Anaheim Ducks have acquired center Chase De Leo from the Winnipeg Jets in a trade for left wing Nic Kerdiles.

The Ducks announced the deal Saturday swapping two California natives hoping for an NHL breakthrough in new surroundings.

De Leo is a 22-yearold prospect from La Mirada, a suburb between Los Angeles and Anaheim. He has appeared in two games for Winnipeg, making his NHL debut against the Ducks in 2016.
