JVS ninth-graders make a difference

-

One little thing can make a really big difference.

Alexei Given, Lorain County JVS Career Readiness ninth-grader from Amherst, said these words about the work he and his class did for Operation Rescue, Inc., a non-profit charitable organization who is committed to assisting the impoverished people of El Salvador.

The goal of Operation Rescue is to raise funds to build 100 homes in El Salvador for people who are currently without structures to live in.

Marsha Norberg and David Gantz from Operation Rescue, recently stopped out to the JVS to visit Instructor Eric Robson’s ninth-grade Career Readiness students who created signs with the names of the of donors who have contributed to building the homes. These signs are then attached to the exterior of the houses.

“When these signs are placed on the outside of the house, the family sees that there are people from the United States who have donated to them and this gives them dignity and value,” Norberg told the ninth-grade class.

“It is really cool how we are able to do this for people that we don’t know, but somehow feel like we do,” shared Given.

Strong words for a fifteen-year-old young man, but reaching the students like this was the hope of Robson when he had the conversation with Norberg to bring this project into his lab at JVS.

The process to make these signs was explained by Given.

“First we had to set up the profile for the signs for the color, font, and text in the software program CorelDraw. Once we had that set, we would do a test run, on our laser engraver, to make sure everything was correct before we ran the final signs.”

Norberg and Gantz shared with the students all that the people of El Salvador have endured and how important these houses are to them and their livelihood.

“These plaques are an extremely important final piece to these homes, and we couldn’t do that part of it if it weren’t for all of you,” Norberg told the class.
