Seven Hills resident named as interim treasurer

-

John Scott has been appointed the interim treasurer for Kirtland Schools.

A Seven Hills resident, Scott will serve on a temporary basis until the School Board can appoint a replacement for Chief Financial Officer/Treasurer Daniel L. Wilson. He is leaving the district to return his focus to Mentor Schools and to spend more time with his family, a news release stated.

The board approved Scott’s appointment at a special meeting on June 29.

Scott has more than 40 years of experience, most recently serving as treasurer for the Clearview School District until retiring in 2013. Since then, he has served as interim treasurer for the Vermilion, Elyria, Warrensville Heights, East Cleveland and Richmond Heights school districts.

Scott began his career as a state examiner with the Ohio Auditor’s Office, performing state examinations of school districts and libraries in Cuyahoga, Lake and Lorain counties. He also served as treasurer for the Cuyahoga Valley Joint Vocational School District (now Cuyahoga Valley Career Center) and an assistant treasurer for Lorain Schools. In the Lakewood School District, he was a consultant for the treasurer and assumed the role of payroll/accounts supervisor.

Superintendent Bill Wade said Scott’s vast experience with school districts will help guide Kirtland Schools through a difficult financial period as the board and administration consider a variety of options to slow projected deficit spending.

On June 18, the School Board announced that Wilson would not be renewing his contract, which ran through June 30. He had served as the district’s treasurer for 3 1/2 years.

Wilson worked as a parttime treasurer with Kirtland Schools whose contract was through a shared agreement with Mentor Schools. In the Mentor district, Wilson serves as chief financial officer, a position he has held since 2004, and will continue in that capacity.
