Elyria police have arrested two suspects they believe stole items fromthe construction site of the new Ely Stadium.

Christopher J. Metelsky, 28, of Elyria, was charged with six counts of receiving stolen property, a fifth-degree felony, and Gary A. Smith, 55, of Elyria, faces five counts of receiving stolen property, according to Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.

Police responded on three separate occasions to the site, 1915 West Ave., for reports of various items being taken, Costantino said.

“We were initially called out there June 25 for new brass fittings and couplings that had been taken,” he said. “We responded a second time, July 6, for additional items.

“Both trips were around $500 worth of stolen items. We were also called back a thirdtime, July9, for the theft of fittings and valves. That theft was valued at around $7,000.”

Costantino said Elyria police detectives linked the pair to the crime and they were arrested July 14 at their 239 Massachusetts Ave.

“The two individuals were repeatedly returning to the spot and selling the items at a local scrap yard,” he said. “The kids and taxpayers were affected by their acts; I’mglad our detectives were able to put an end to it.”

Metelsky was in the Lorain County Jail on a $15,000 bond. Smith was lodged on a $12,500 bond.

Both men must appear at 2 p.m. July 18 before Elyria Municipal Court Judge Robert C. White.
