Resident, Oven 51 Pizza & Gamery unite for school supply drive

- By Briana Contreras

Advocates in Elyria are working together to collect school supplies for children living at the Genesis House Lorain County Safe Harbor.

Elyria resident Leigh Ann Arroyo and Oven 51 Pizza & Gamery teamed up to accept donations of school supplies for 25 youngsters.

Donations are being accepted at Oven 51, 148 Middle Ave., during operating hours until Aug. 4.

Organizers are requesting per child 30 pencils, three boxes of facial tissues, two erasers, a back pack, two packs of 10 Crayola washable markers, a box of 12 colored pencils, a pack of four dry erase markers, a pair of Fiskar scissors, two packs of Post-Its, a sketch pad, a box of slider ziplock bags — a quart for girls and a gallon for boys — two wide-ruled composition notebooks and four two-pocket, three-prong, plain and plastic folders.

Money donations also are accepted, Arroyo said.

She said this is her second time collecting needed supplies, not only for the children, but for men and women as well.

“I just want to give back to the community and show people who are less fortunate that the community does love and care for them, and that they’re not forgotten,” Arroyo said. “It’s a community helping a community.”

Arroyo said she wanted to join forces with Oven 51 because of its efforts in the community.

The pizza bistro helped her and her family raise money toward another cause in the past, she said.

Jennifer Migra, co-owner of Oven 51, said she and staff were happy to work with Arroyo and gather school supplies from patrons.

“We’re glad to help give a little more incentive and to help others in need,” Migra said. “We do what we can to help and get the word out. We’re more than happy to do it.

“It takes a village to raise a child and there’s a lot of children in this village.”

Oven 51 will give a discount to donors who dine in the eatery.

Migra said a dollar will be taken off of their bills for every five items donated.

Oven 51 will accept donations during their operation hours between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to midnight on the weekends.

For any questions, call Oven 51 at 440-309-4068 or Arroyo at 419-602-9104.
