School district hires new treasurer, extends superintendent
The Amherst Exempted Village School District has hired a new treasurer.
Amy Gioffredo, who spent the last three years as treasurer for Fremont City Schools and a five-year stint for Strongsville City Schools, now will serve Amherst.
Gioffredo’s contract was approved at the July 30 Amherst Schools board meeting.
She has a three-year contract with an annual salary of $106,489. Her first day is Aug. 15, according to a news release from Amherst Schools.
“Our community sought a treasurer with strong financial experience and communication skills,” said Board President Teresa Gilles. “Gioffredo’s lengthy experience in school finance and her positive, customer-focused attitude will help us maintain our strong financial stability long through 2022 and beyond.”
Gioffredo said she is super excited about the Amherst opportunity.
“I’m really looking forward to being apart of a district that does such Left to right: Amy Gioffredo, Steve Sayers
an exemplary job financially,” she said. “I also live in nearby Vermilion, so it is an opportunity to work close to where I live. I can hardly contain my excitement.”
Gioffredo said her previous experience has prepared her for this opportunity.
“I worked as the assistant superintendent for Strongsville, and that gave me an opportunity to work where they were doing sizeable building changes,” she said. “Amherst is a job I applied for years ago; I have always wanted this job, and I’m glad I got it this time around.”
Gioffredo said working for Amherst Schools is an amazing opportunity.
“It is a place where good communication is at every level,” she said. “People in the district find common ground and are able to get stuff done for the benefit of the students; that’s what it is all about.”
The Board also renewed and extended Superintendent Steve Sayers’ contract for three years through the 2021-22 school year, the release said.
“Sayers’ leadership has been key to maintaining high quality education at a low cost to the community,” Gilles said. “Our administrative costs are 31 percent below the state average, we’re making critical facility updates and we’ve added innovative programs while remaining fiscally responsible. We are lucky to have him here.”
Sayers said Amherst is a great place to live and work.
“I just completed my 10th year here at Amherst, and I’m looking forward to all the good things to come,” he said. “These years have been tremendous. The people are great and the town is truly remarkable. My family and I are glad to call Amherst home.”
Additionally, the board hired Steve Meggitt as interim assistant principal at Steele High School for the 2018-19 school year.
Meggitt will support interim Steele High principal Joe Tellier, according to the release.
