A Parma man was charged with attempted murder Aug. 3 after police say he tried to kill a guard at the Lorain County Jail.

Eric L. Robinson, 47, was indicted on single counts of attempted murder, attempted felonious assault and assault in connection to the June 22 attack.

Authorities said Robinson had been arrested on a shoplifting charge by Avon police early in the morning of the attack for allegedly stealing $465.83 worth of products from Walmart.

Following his arrest, Robinson was transported to the Lorain County Jail, where he was taken to the shower room and instructed by a guard to change into the jail uniform, police said.

Robinson allegedly lunged at the guard, leading to a tussle during which the pair wrestled to an area outside the room, investigators said.

Robinson was able to pin the guard to the ground and had placed his arm over the man’s neck, police said.

When another guard heard what was going on and attempted to aid his comrade by pulling Robinson off, the effort proved unsuccessful, authorities said.

The guard was finally able to be freed after Robinson was kicked in the face and multiple guards arrived on scene to help restrain the inmate, police said.

Robinson and the guard were transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment and returned to the jail, according to police.

Robinson is out of jail on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 9 in Lorain County Common Pleas Court.

Robinson was sentenced to 10 days in jail and a $150 fine July 10 on the initial attempted theft charge stemming from the Walmart incident, according to Avon Lake Municipal Court records.
