New Creations thrift store offers goods in new way

- By Briana Contreras

New Creations, a thrift and consignment store at 4355 Oberlin Ave. in Lorain, is “turning old into new” and offering a variety of products at reasonable and discounted prices.

The shop opened in March in a building that formerly housed a mattress and furniture store.

Chuck Mosley, the owner, works alongside his brother Louis Mosley offering discounted products seen in other stores.

The Lorain natives focus on refurbishing old furniture and selling it like new.

Chuck Mosley, 70, said he picked up a knack for restoring old furniture when he was helping his neighbors or church members.

Louis Mosley, 64, assists in restoring the furniture while keeping up on the operations of the business.

He worked in maintenance for Lorain City Schools before retiring after 30 years of service.

Chuck Mosley’s interest in refurbishing began when he started collecting old pieces of furniture like wooden chairs, couches, china cabinets, wardrobes and tables to refurbish the items.

He said he had a basement full of household items that were restored and decided to sell them in a store of his own.

New Creations stock items that either were donated or purchased goods that can be fixed.

“The goal was to put together something unique in the area where there are a compilation of products and items for just about everybody,” Chuck Mosley said. “My idea was to make this a shopping experience. The place is large enough and there’s enough stuff here.”

Locals vendors also sell some of their wares.

“We’re looking for those special things that people can’t find anywhere else,” Chuck Mosley said.

New Creations offer products at affordable prices, which usually are half of other stores, he said.

Customers can make an offer on some items and Chuck Mosley said he is willing to match prices to satisfy them.

“This community is really in need of a lot of things, and some don’t have a lot of money,” he said. “We make it very easy for people to get the things they need.”

New Creations is available to help customers, Chuck Mosley said.

“The joy is to see (customers) happy when they leave,” he said. “It’s a win, win. We want to make it available for everybody to get something.”

He said he wants New Creations to serve as a resource and is looking to accept vouchers from organizations for families in need furniture.

New Creations also offer balloon decorations.

Balloons can be sold individually, but more so as bouquets or customized requests for events, holidays or special occasions.

Chuck Mosley began balloon decorating while stationed in California as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. during the Vietnam War.

He said he spent about 45 years in California as one of the top balloon designers in the state, creating decorations for events such as a presidential campaign at the University of California, Los Angeles.

At New Creations, a bouquet can be sold for $20-25.

“The balloon industry was big in California,” Chuck Mosley said. “This is a service not many people offer in the area. We’re excited to be able to provide it.”

He said the balloon side of his business is adjunct, but he eventually would like to have crews help and create balloon designs to take anywhere.

Chuck Mosley added his business derived from his passions coming together; especially having the chance to work with family.

“It’s a dream come true that I can work in a family business and do something significant,” he said. “The essence is to, hopefully, develop a legacy and pass the business down to the relatives. We would like to make this something where the young kids can learn something here too.”

Chuck Mosley said he and his family currently are focusing on giving people the best deals possible on a wide array of products.

“Right now, we’re pretty much that only place (in the community) that has this kind of capacity and a variety of stuff,” he said. “We’re hoping to be that main place where people can come and find what they’re looking for.”

New Creations is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
