Abline Cannon showed no emotion Aug. 29 as Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge D. Chris Cook read off 13 guilty verdicts against him.

A jury of six men and six women found Cannon, a 38-year-old Cleveland drug dealer, guilty of aggravated murder of 23-year-old David Barreiro, of Lorain, murder, kidnapping, two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of felonious assault, a single count of tampering with evidence and two counts of having weapons under disability many of which also bear a firearm specification.

Jurors deliberated for about 12 hours over three days.

The panel acquitted Cannon of a murder charge in a case that has been awaiting resolution for almost two years.

According to prosecutors, in the early hours of Dec. 10, 2016, Cannon and at least one other accomplice kicked in the door

of Barreiro’s Shore Drive apartment and shot him four times before he was even able to leave his bedroom.

On the aggravated murder charge, Cannon could face from 20 years to life in prison to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Cook is scheduled to sentence Cannon at 1 p.m., Aug. 30.

Barreiro’s family was not able to attend the reading of the verdict, but will appear at sentencing and give victim impact statements.

Cannon’s attorneys argued their client was in the apartment along with an uncharged accomplice making a drug sale when two men who had traveled to the apartment along with Cannon, but had stayed in his vehicle, kicked in the door and attempted to rob Barreiro.

The case hinged on both the physical and circumstantial evidence presented over the five-day trial, which included a large amount of Cannon’s blood on walls in the apartment complex, 11 gun shell casings and 10 bullet holes.
