Library program teaches STEM skills

- By Zachary Srnis

The Avon Lake Public Library, 32649 Electric Blvd., held an Aug. 30 program to teach young children some science and math skills.

“Wee STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) is a program for ages 3 to 5 we hold to teach the kids some skills and get them learning ,even when they are not in school,” said Donna Leigh, Discovery Works associate at the Avon Lake Library. “We do this drop-in style where parents can come in on the last Thursday of the month and get a taste of the program.

“If they think the kids enjoyed it, they can sign up for the similar programs we will have later on.”

Leigh said the program has been popular.

“We have been doing the drop-ins since January, and people always show up,” she said. “Parents like being able to take their child to an event they don’t need to worry about ahead of time.

“Children may not like it, so parents enjoy the small risk of stopping by the library for just a few minutes. It serves as a great introduction for us to gauge the interest of kids in the area.”

Leigh said she’s always looking at different things to include with the program.

“It’s always something that is STEM based,” she said. “That gives me plenty of different ideas to work with.

“Today, we are looking at balancing and how size doesn’t determine weight. We also did a shark-themed event for Shark Week.

“It depends on what I think will be educational, but also fun. I also like to tie it in with a book to reinforce the importance of reading for these young guys.”

Mary Martin, of Avon Lake, said she was “very” impressed with the program.

“It’s really wonderful,” Martin said. “I bring the children for the story times and other events. This library is the best; we all love it.”

Kristen Anelly, of Avon Lake, said the Wee event was “truly” great.

“The library is doing a great job offering something like this,” Anelly said. “It gives them a chance to learn at a young age.

“It also allows the kids to learn hands-on, which is really the best way to learn.”

“It’s really wonderful. I bring the children for the story times and other events.”
