Vermilion dominates Brookside with 49-7 win

- By Cam Mazurik

The Vermilion Sailors looked to keep their hot start rolling versus the Brookside Cardinals, and succeeded in a 49-7 drubbing of the Cardinals on Aug. 31.

The Sailors simply couldn’t be stopped on their first drive against the Cardinals. Senior running back Davis McDaniel, got the game started with two rushes for 12 yards to get the running game rolling.

Vermilion finished their first drive with senior quarterback Seth Hurd throwing a 22 yard strike to senior wide receiver Jonah Pfeil with 8:08 remaining in the first quarter.

Vermilion stayed efficient for their second drive of night. The Sailors was able to complete another strong 80 yard drive, with a dominating 27 yard touchdown from Jakob Koleszar, with 3:22 remaining in the first.

Vermilion coach Brett Colahan was proud of the way his team execute on offense early in the game.

“The kids are buying in to what we are preaching, doing what we do,” Colahan said. “Paying attention to details and executing, executing, executing.”

Vermilion did that exactly what their coach has been preaching and executed on their opportunities, as the Sailors translated the Cardinals’ mistakes into success.

Hurd scored his first rushing touchdown of the game with a 7-yard scamper off a QB read, giving Vermilion a 21-0 over the Cardinals.

The Cardinals intercepted a throw from Hurd to give themselves some momentum. But penalties negated a 22-yard run and a 20-yard run in the second quarter.

Vermilion kept control of the game, scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns to separate themselves from the Cardinals — a 22-yard scamper from Koleszar, as well as McDaniel’s second rushing touchdown of the night.

“It feels really good, you know going in had some unknowns,” Colahan said. “It feels good especially with the things this kids have been through.”

The Sailors were able to fend off any last minute surge from the Brookside, defeating the Cardinals 56-13.
