Mexican Mutual Society highlights domestic violence awareness

The Mexican Mutual Society will host a celebrity bartender night Sept. 14 in support of Genesis House.

From 6-9 p.m., Genesis House Executive Director Virginia Beckman and Meg McIntyre will be on hand at the historic south Lorain social club, 1820 E. 28th St., as celebrity bartenders with Domestic Violence Awareness Month recognized in October. The event is free. Donations of nonperisha­ble food items being accepted at the door.

Beckman said the evening will be a fun event to talk about the needs in Lorain County.

In addition, from 4-8 p.m., Sept. 29, Genesis House will hold a rally at Lorain’s St. Frances Cabrini Church, 2143 Homewood Drive in Lorain, for a kickoff rally previewing its month-long schedule of events and programmin­g with a number of community leaders on hand.

“We’re hoping that the rally is a fun event, and we’re hoping to bring people out to the Mexican Mutual Society,” Beckman said.

“It will be an event to launch all the events we have planned in October, and celebrate all the great partnershi­ps we have across the county.”

Genesis House provides a wide of support services for victims of domestic violence including a shelter in addition to community outreach, education and advocacy and aftercare interventi­on.

During the 2018 fiscal year, Genesis House provided 1,875 days of safe shelter, 10,000 points of interventi­on and reached more than 72,000 people, Beckman said.

She also noted more than 72 percent of all murder/suicides involve an intimate partner, in addition that more than half of all the murder victims are female.
