Superdome has been friendly over the years

- By Jeff Schudel

Strange Voodoo is in the air inside the MercedesBenz Superdome when the Browns and Saints play a football game in the Big Easy.

• The Browns won their first game of the expansion era on the final play of a game played on Halloween, 1999, when Tim Couch threw a Hail Mary 58 yards to Kevin Johnson in the end zone for an improbable, 21-16, thrilling upset.

The victory was the first for the Browns in 1,409 days. Cleveland did not have a pro football team from 1996-98. The last time they won before beating the Saints was on Dec. 17, 1995, when they beat the Bengals, 26-10, in old Cleveland Stadium.

Couch’s touchdown pass, which he recently said was the high point of his five years with the Browns, could have been negated by a penalty, but officials, watching the flight of the ball never saw Browns offensive tackle Orlando Brown clubbing a prone Saints defensive lineman with a vicious forearm.

• In 2010, with Colt McCoy at quarterback, the Browns beat the Saints, 30-17, in memorable fashion when linebacker David Bowens had interception returns of 30 and 64 yards for a pair of touchdowns. McCoy was the winning quarterback while completing 9-of-16 passes for 74 yards. The game also featured a 68-yard run by Reggie Hodges on a fake punt. It was the last time the Browns played in New Orleans.

Just in case the Browns have used up all their southern mojo, they will also count on defensive end Myles Garrett to harass Saints quarterback Drew Brees the way he harassed Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the opener. Garrett had two sacks, two forced fumbles, a pass break-up and six tackles in his best game as a pro.

“Going against two Hall of Famers back to back, it puts a smile on my face because you grow up watching these guys, but obviously, getting an opportunity to hopefully introduce myself to (Brees), as well, on the field,” Garrett said. “You have to make sure that he can’t step up. He has a tendency to set back pretty deep and then step up into the pocket and make those throws when he’s going deep or he’s going to be sitting in the pocket and make those throws quickly at different angles.

“With those shorter guys, you try to bat the ball down. He’s been doing it well for many years so it’s not as easy as I put it.”

The Browns are 0-0-1 after tying the Steelers. The Saints are still smarting from losing, 48-40, to the Buccaneers. Bucs quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdown passes.

The Browns do not want to get into a track meet with the Saints. Even the offensive players acknowledge that.

“We know that (Brees) is an extremely great quarterback,” Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry said. “They have an extremely great offense. We want to slow them down, take them off of the field as much as possible. That’s up to the offense being able to execute and not have penalties that set ourselves back and give the defense good positions.”

The Browns will have a quick turnaround after playing the Saints. They play the Jets on Sept. 20 at FirstEnergy Stadium in their only scheduled night game of 2018.
