A Lorain County grand jury will decide whether a Lorain woman will face felony charges on an abandoned, emaciated dog.

Amanda Pippens, 34, waived her preliminary hearing Sept. 17 in a case where she is facing cruelty to companion animals and abandoning animals in Lorain Municipal Court.

Her co-defendant, 36-year-old Morris Ellison, also of Lorain, did not appear at the hearing as he was picked up on a warrant out of Cuyahoga County and will be returned to Lorain after the completion of the case.

Ellison is facing the same charges.

According to a Lorain police report, the charges stem from an Aug. 21 incident in which Officer Rick Broz was called to a home in the 500 block of Washington Avenue for reports of an emaciated pit bull.

Broz, who handles dog issues for the Police Department, described the animal as “horribly emaciated” with its ribs, back and backbone showing and palpated.

The dog was panting and unable to walk after being located on the south side of the residence, the report said.

Broz believed, based on the dog’s condition, it was abandoned in front of the house.

A second dog, a red pit bull, was located at a neighboring residence. The dog appeared to be less than a year old and allegedly was thrown out of the house by a neighbor while moving out.

Neither dog was able to walk, and it is believed both animals were starved over a long period of time and were abandoned by people who were in the process of being evicted. to the Lorain Animal Clinic They were transported where both were given emergency care, according to the report.
