Accused teacher resigns
District was notified by police of inappropriate contact with student during summer
An Avon Lake High School math teacher has resigned due to inappropriate contact with a 17-year-old female student over the summer, according to Avon Lake City Schools officials.
Avon Lake City Schools Superintendent Robert Scott confirmed to The Morning Journal that the teacher is Dan Wilson.
Wilson has been with the district for 10 years and was the head coach of the boys varsity golf team and advised the Diversity Club, Scott said.
The district was informed of the contact a few weeks after it was contacted by the Avon Lake Police Department.
Avon Lake conducted an investigation in regards to a 17-year-old student, who no longer is enrolled in the district.
“We truly appreciate their help and their collaboration with the district,” Scott said.
The district took action after investigating the matter and reaching a determination, he said.
“We hold our teachers to a very high standard,” Scott said. “Our concern is for the young lady involved.”
In a letter to parents obtained by The Journal from Avon Lake High School Principal Joseph J. Mueller, the district took action after learning of “concerning communication” involving phone and text messages between a teacher and a student.
“Avon Lake City Schools and its teaching staff maintains the highest standards of conduct and professional behavior,” Mueller wrote. “Sometimes, those standards of conduct and professional behavior are not met and the Avon Lake City Schools takes immediate and effective action to remove the staff member from the classroom and the school district, as well as all reporting requirements of the ODE (Ohio Department of Education)/Office of Educator Professional Conduct.”
Mueller noted the school’s math team is committed to providing “positive, seamless instructional support for students directly affected.”
Some additional classes also will change teachers in order to best serve everyone, Mueller wrote. The changes will take place Oct. 1, he wrote.
Guidance counselors and pupil services are available to provide support for students, staff and families, Mueller wrote.
“While disappointed, we remain committed to earning the community’s continuing trust,” he wrote. “We will share further communication appropriately.”
It remains unclear how long the alleged activity took place in addition to the investigation into the matter by Avon Lake Police.
Avon Lake Police Department officials were not immediately available for comment.
The Avon Lake City Schools Board of Education will convene a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 1 to officially accept Wilson’s resignation.
