Lutheran West’s Webb advances to state tourney

Get ready Columbus, Sam Webb is heading down Interstate 71 next weekend for a visit.

The Lutheran West sophomore shot a 39 on the front nine and a 38 on the back half to place second with a 77 in the field of 71 golfers at Tam O’Shanter Hills golf course Oct. 2, becoming the top individual qualifier for the Division II state tournament out of the Northeast District.

The D-II girls state tournament takes place at Ohio State University’s Gray Course from Oct. 1213, with 18 holes being played each

day.

Laurel’s Jami Morris won the event with a 74, but qualified to state with her team, which took second overall with a score of 371, falling to event winner Cardinal Mooney (370).

Webb and Andrews Osborne Academy’s Jelena Lainovic are the two individual qualifiers from the outing.

Webb was not the only participan­t at Tam O’Shanter from the area. Elyria Catholic’s Paige Sexstella and Madelyn Wechter, along with Keystone’s Nikki Selzer competed at the event. Sexstella tied for seventh overall with an 89, with 2017 state qualifier Selzer not too far behind (11th, 91). Wechter finished in a tie for 34th (102).

At the Division II boys district tournament at Windmill Lakes on Oct. 2, no one qualified for the state tournament, but there were a few strong outings had by Morning Journal area competitor­s.

Elyria Catholic junior Kyle Mahaffey missed out on a state berth by a stroke, placing in a tie for ninth with a score of 79. Dylan Ledford of Waynedale claimed the final individual qualifier spot with a score of 78.

As a team, the Panthers placed 11th among the 12team field. Elyria Catholic posted a score of 379 behind Mahaffey, senior Josh Wells (90), sophomore William Muzilla (102), senior Nick Urbaczewsk­i (108) and senior Devin Pluta (112).

Lutheran West was the other area team to compete a the district tournament, placing seventh (346). Sophomore Jakob Gross paced the Longhorns with an 83, with seniors Sam Spacek and John Smolik carding an 86. Senior Hunter West chipped in with a 91 and junior Tyler Robinson posted a 92.
