It involves taking images of the breast and using advanced software; the radiologist is able to review and interpret the image. Using digital editing software, the radiologist can adjust exposure and other variables to create a clear image of the entire breast, even if the original image is not perfect.

Studies show that digital mammography is significantly better than film mammography in screening women who are under the age of 50, or women of any age who have very dense breasts, due to improved image quality and clarity. Digital mammography uses less radiation than film and allows improvements in image storage and transmission because images are stored and sent electronically.

Patients are often pleasantly surprised by how much faster and more comfortable it is. Additionally, research shows that digital mammography detects abnormalities that may go unnoticed on a traditional film mammogram. It takes less than 15 minutes to complete—half the time of a traditional film mammogram with improved quality.
