- By Kevin Martin

Lorain County Community College hosted a college fair for high school juniors and seniors on Oct. 4.

With more than 100 post-secondary institutions from Ohio and 12 other states on hand at the college’s Ewing Activities Center representing colleges, universities and service academies, prospective students and their families got the opportunity to speak directly with representatives of their desired schools.

“This is an ideal opportunity for high school students and their families to get details and ask questions about the academic programs and student services of many different colleges,” said LCCC President Dr. Marcia J. Ballinger. “This information will help you select the right institution and get you started on the path to success.”

In addition, the fair hosted a presentation on the financial aid process to assist families in preparing to apply for federal, state and institutional financial

assistance.

Sarah Nau from LCCC’s financial services department, encouraged students and financial to cast a wide net in applying for

both merit and need-based assistance where there are more than 100 different

“Some of them are definitely need-based; some of them are based on your

GPA and some of them are based on major. So there’s a whole slew of them out there. I think we have more than 100 of them that students can apply for,” Nau said.

“One thing I like to tell students is, don’t fill out just one application and think you’re going to get it. It is I guess you could say a competition. You’re going up against all the other people who fill out that scholarship application to see if you’re going to get that award or not,” Nau added.

Nau said there are times when students may qualify for 10 different scholarships or awards yet only fill out a limited amount of applications.

With scholarship opportunities from churches, civic organizations and other community groups, there is no lack of opportunities for young scholars if they take the time to research and explore what it available.

“There are just so many scholarships out there. There seriously are scholarships for left-handed people or blue-eyed people. You just can’t imagine how many of them are out there,” Nau said.
