JVS students educate elementary students at FFA event
For the ninth consecutive year, Lorain County JVS student members of the National FFA Organization, participated in the ‘Food For America’ program, on Oct. 9 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds in Wellington.
Third- and fourth-grade students from local school districts attended this event, where 29 interactive displays were set up to engage the students and provide them with knowledge of the agricultural industry.
JVS FFA Chapter members, those students in the Landscape and Greenhouse Management and Industrial Equipment Mechanics programs, worked different stations throughout the fairgrounds.
The bee and honey station was manned by Savannah Roby, landscape and greenhouse management senior from Wellington and Skyler Mshabbek, landscape and greenhouse management junior from North Ridgeville. Students learned about bees, beekeeper attire and even got to taste honey that was harvested by the JVS students back on their campus.
Tommy Keller, landscape and greenhouse management senior from Midview, was a group leader this year and said, “I really enjoy walking around to each station and being able to discuss with the kids how these things impact their daily lives.”
Seeing how each generation of students is becoming further removed from the farm is what motivates Beth Berthold, Landscape and Greenhouse Management Instructor and JVS FFA advisor, to bring her students back each year.
Each group spent about 6 minutes at each station, where they learned about crops, tractors, maple syrup, beef meat, dairy cattle, recycling and composting, to name a few.
