It didn’t take Avon Lake long to establish control Oct. 20 at home in a Division I Elyria sectional final against rival Westlake.

The Shoremen got two goals from senior Cameron Salco within the first 18 minutes and held on for a 3-0 win.

Avon Lake (14-2-1) advanced to face Avon in the Division I Elyria district

semifinal on Oct. 24 at Avon for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

“We had to start out on the right foot, we had to go hard from the start and make sure we got the first goal,” Salco said. “This is a very big deal and Westlake has been one of our biggest opponents for the last four years I’ve been here.”

In the opening sixth minute, Salco got a feed from Josh Lawniczak and buried it past Demons goalkeeper Levi Swisher.

In the 18th minute, Avon Lake capitalized on a Demons defensive miscue after the ball deflected off a Westlake player to Salco running into the box and he volleyed it in for a score.

The Demons (5-9-3) had a chance minutes later when sophomore Sam Falcone received a header off a corner kick and hit it off the left post, leaving them empty-handed.

Senior Edison Lemanowicz sealed the deal in the 60th minute when he stole the ball, passed it to Drew Del Giudice and received it back for a goal.

Westlake had another opportunity in the 63rd minute on a PK attempt with Andrew Iannello, but goalkeeper Dino Pietromica stopped it.

Avon Lake outshot Westlake, 9-3, on target.

“I felt like we were just as good as them, but we made two crucial mistakes,” Westlake coach Mike Besu said.
