Westlake resident completes internship

-

Westlake resident Jordan Martin interned in the University Grants and Foundation Relations Office at Ashland University this past summer.

As an English major at Ashland University, Martin was able to use and improve her critical thinking, researching and writing skill under Sharon Lowe, her mentor.

Martin is a 2015 graduate of Westlake High School and has not always had an interest in writing. It was not until she came to Ashland University that the professors and the books really made a difference in developing her love for writing.

Throughout her internship, Martin was able to learn the various aspects of writing proposals and managing earned grants through many hours of research regarding foundations that accept grants. On top of that, Martin wrote multiple letters of intent to these foundations that led to a heightened level of understanding for both the research and writing aspects of grants.

Martin said, “The main objectives of the internship were to learn how to write grant proposals and other important documents and advance Ashland University through the projects my mentor had planned” and continued by saying, “I enjoyed serving Ashland University in a way that will deliver visible results in the next few years.”

Along with her love of writing, Martin is involved in multiple groups on campus.

She enjoys being a part of intramural teams at the recreation center, while being an active member of Alpha Lamba Delta and the Well. Martin also assists other students in developing their own writing skills with her role as a writing assistant at the University Writing Center.

With the hope to pursue a career in grant writing, Martin told of how this internship is invaluable to her undergraduate experience.

She said she is very grateful for Sharon Lowe’s encouragement throughout the summer and was able to learn that she is very capable of being successful in this career field.

Martin concluded by saying, “This internship has given me confidence that I can be successful in writing grant proposals for nonprofit organizations. Additionally, I am looking at graduate schools for nonprofit organizations with a focus in Nonprofit Management. I have direction, but I am still choosing the best path to reach my end goal: making a difference!”
