Division I doublehead­er set for CSU

Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center will be the site of the fourth annual Northeast Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer men’s basketball doublehead­er Nov. 10.

In the first game, Akron of the Mid-American Conference will face Youngstown State of the Horizon League.

YSU is led by sophomore forward and former Lorain standout Naz Bohannon.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Bohannon was a Horizon League All-Freshman team honoree last season after averaging 7.2 points and 8.1 rebounds in 32 games, 31 of them starts. He was recently named to the preseason AllHorizon League second team for the 2018-19 season.

YSU is coaches by former Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School and Cleveland State player Jerrod Calhoun. The Penguins finished 8-24 overall last season, 6-12 in the Horizon League.

Akron is coached by John Groce. Top returning players for the Zips are 6-6 junior forward Daniel Utomi (16.3 points, 5.3 rebounds last season) and 6-5 senior point guard Jimond Ivey (13.1 points, 3.5 assists). Also on the roster is 6-11 sophomore center Mark Kostelac, a former Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School standout.

The Zips last season were 14-18 overall and 6-12 in the MAC.

CSU of the Horizon League will face Kent State of the MAC in the second game.

The Vikings are coached by Dennis Felton and led by 6-1 sophomore point guard Tyree Appleby.

Appleby was a Horizon League All-Freshman team honoree last season after averaging 11.8 points and 4.0 assists in 34 games, 25 of then starts. He was named to the All-Horizon League first team for the 2018-19 season.

CSU finished 12-23 overall last season and 6-12 in the Horizon League.

Kent State is coached by Rob Senderoff. The Golden Flashes last season were 1717 overall and 10-9 in the MAC. Top returning players are 6-3 senior guard Jaylin Walker (16.9 points per game) and 6-0 senior guard Jalen Avery (10.3 points per game).
