Students at Ranger HighTech Academy, 5580 Lear Nagle Road in North Ridgeville, learned about potential career opportunities Oct. 26 during the school’s second annual Manufacturing Day.

The event featured local manufacturers as well as students from the Lorain County JVS informing their peers about what they do and what careers are available.

“Last year, we brought in some manufacturers, but this year we wanted to add more to it and provide more of a hands-on event for the students,” said Melissa Durkin, principal at Ranger High-Tech Academy. “We have people from PolyOne, Beckett Gas and students from the JVS here. I’m thankful for the turnout.” Durkin said the event is about raising student awareness on what they could potentially do moving forward.

“The idea was for students to get a pulse on what is out there,” she said. “These people are coming in and showing the students what they do and why they do it.”

Annette McIver, career services specialist for LCJVS, said the school was invited to show students the education options.

“We are highlighting our precision machines, computerized design and drafting, and Project Lead The Way, our pre-engineering program,” McIver said. “We have students talking to them and telling them what they do.

“It’s important to reach out to students at a young age and show them what their options are.”

Brenden Strukelj, 16, a

junior at the JVS, said the

event had him reliving some memories.

“I went to this school when it was Lear North Elementary,” Brenden said. “It has been very nostalgic for sure. It’s been pretty fun coming back.

“I remember when I was these kids’ age, so it has allowed me to take what I’ve learned and provide some guidance to help them.”
