Wilhelm watch list is narrowed to 12

The Matt Wilhelm Award will be presented to The Morning Journal football player of the year Nov. 12. Check out this week’s list, one week before the five finalists are announced.

The Matt Wilhelm Award is presented to The Morning Journal’s football player of the year. This year’s award will be presented during a special edition of Varsity Chalk Talk at the Westlake Hooley House on Nov. 12.

With the end of the regular season, the Matt Wilhelm Award watch list is trimmed to 12 players. From the list of 12, five finalists will be announced prior to the award show.

In alphabetic­al order:

• Darren Anders, North Olmsted, Sr.: Rushed 18 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns, adding a fouryard touchdown pass, in a 56-54 win over Berea-Midpark. For the season, Anders has 1,364 yards and 18 touchdowns on 206 carries, adding 16 receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown, a kickoff return for a touchdown, a passing touchdown and nine sacks on defense.

• Leighton Banjoff, Elyria Catholic, Sr.: Rushed 29 times for 287 yards and two touchdowns along with three receptions for 61 yards, adding 11 tackles (seven solo) and a forced fumble on defense, in a 33-13 win over Rocky River. For the season, Banjoff has 1,308 yards and 15 touchdowns on 155 carries, adding 17 receptions for 275 yards and two touchdowns to go with 104 tackles (48 solo), four tackles for a loss, two sacks, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two intercepti­ons and two touchdowns on defense.

• Brandon Coleman, Columbia, Sr.: Rushed seven times for 234 yards and three touchdowns, also throwing a 53-yard touchdown pass, while adding four tackles (two solo) and a tackle for a loss in a 48-0 win over Oberlin. For the season, Coleman has 1,578 yards, 23 touchdowns and a two-point conversion on 124 carries, nine receptions for 109 yards and a passing touchdown, adding 41 solo tackles (11.5 for a loss), a sack and two intercepti­ons on defense.

• Drew Engle, Clearview, Sr.: Rushed nine times for 97 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-12 win over Brooklyn. For the season, Engle has 1,030 yards, 17 touchdowns and a two-point conversion on 165 carries.

• Cameron Engrish, Elyria Catholic, Sr.: Was 15-for-25 for 173 yards, three touchdowns and one intercepti­on in a 33-13 win over Rocky River. For the season, Engrish is 131-for-227 for 2,039 yards and 26 touchdowns with nine intercepti­ons.

• Michael Finnegan, Rocky River, Sr.: Was 15-for-28 for 158 yards, a touchdown and an intercepti­on in a 33-13 loss to Elyria Catholic. For the season, Finnegan is 161-for-252 for 1,969 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight intercepti­ons.

• Andrew Gooch, Midview, Sr.: Was 8-for-21 for 113 yards in a 45-7 loss to Avon Lake. For the season, Gooch is 175-for-330 for 2,662 yards, 21 touchdowns and four intercepti­ons.

• Teddy Grendzynsk­i, Olmsted Falls, Sr.: Was 8-for-11 for 250 yards and five touchdowns, adding seven carries for 120 yards and a touchdown, in a 56-14 win over North Olmsted. For the season, Grendzynsk­i is 42-for-78 for 1,258 yards, 17 touchdowns and two intercepti­ons, adding 59 carries for 534 yards, 11 touchdowns and a twopoint conversion.

• Ryan Maloy, Avon, Sr.: Was 17-for-23 for 216 yards and four touchdowns, adding 141 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, in a 7747 win over Berea-Midpark. For the season, Maloy is 117for-189 for 1,590 yards, 20 touchdowns and six intercepti­ons, adding 672 yards and seven touchdowns on 84 carries and a touchdown reception.

• Konner Riggs, Avon Lake, Sr.: Rushed 23 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-7 win over Midview. For the season, Riggs has 1,588 yards and 23 touchdowns on 243 carries.

• Khennedy Scagliozzo, Amherst, Sr.: Rushed 20 times for 267 yards and five touchdowns in a 55-7 win over Westlake. For the season, Scagliozzo has 1,854 yards and 28 touchdowns on 251 carries, adding three kick returns for touchdowns.

• Jack Spellacy, Olmsted Falls, Sr.: Rushed 13 times for 63 yards and a touchdown, adding two receptions for 56 yards, in a 5614 win over Olmsted Falls. For the season, Spellacy has 1,622 yards, 24 touchdowns and a two-point conversion on 185 carries, adding six receptions for 176 yards and three touchdowns.
