Schools honor high ACT achievemen­t of scholars

Lorain City Schools honored the high achievemen­t of scholars at a ceremony on Nov. 1 at Lorain High School.

Forty-five scholars were recognized as members of the “21 and Over Club” for their scores on the ACT exam. By scoring 21 or higher, these scholars have placed themselves in the national average among test takers across the country.

“I’m here to tell you that in this situation math rules do not apply. Forty five is so much greater than 45. Twenty one is so much greater than 21,” said Nancy Lecorchick, Director, 11th and 12th Grade Academy.

“These numbers represent possibilit­ies that cannot be measured. It represents

excellence that cannot be quantified. It represents intangible terms like hope, potential, drive and determinat­ion.”

Lorain City Schools CEO David Hardy Jr. thanked teachers, school leaders and the community in the roles they play in guiding scholars to making Lorain proud.

“This is what we live for. Nights like tonight. I realize that the challenges that we all face and the opportunit­y to be great. These are the moments that are great that we should celebrate,” Hardy said.

Hardy, rememberin­g a lesson her learned from his own mother from stressed the importance truly recognizin­g achievemen­t.

“She reminds me of one very important message: we should be honored for the moments we do great things and stay present in those moments,” Hardy added.

He asked scholars to think about the people who helped them in their journey whether it be a family member, teacher or a loved one.

Among the honorees, Carissa Holcomb scored a 34, placing her at the top 1 percent of test takers, and Trent Jackson achieved a rare perfect score of 36.

In recognitio­n of Jackson’s performanc­e, he was enshrined as the first member of Lorain City Schools Academic Hall of Fame.

In addition, Lorain City Schools honored two scholars, Devin Penny and Dondi Wilson, who both tested as eighth graders and achieved scores of 23 and 24, respective­ly.
