Board recognizes scholars
The Lorain City Schools Board of Education formally recognized two scholars for their outstanding ACT scores.
At the Board’s Nov. 19 regular meeting, Lorain County Community College early college seniors Rico Mercado and Sariana Rivera received certificates of recognition from Board President Tony Dimacchia for their academic performance on the ACT exams.
“I just want to, number one, again commend you guys on your academic achievement,” Dimacchia said. “A lot of the clouds that cover Lorain don’t get to the see sunshine.
“And for us Board of Education members, one of the greatest things that we could do is graduate kids. And part of getting to graduation is how you guys achieve in the classroom and how you handle these state test scores and state standards.”
Mercado and Rivera’s performance went above and beyond hopes in a continuing cycle of recognizing students for their great achievement, Dimacchia said.
In accepting the recognition, Mercado urged the Board to continue supporting the early college program, which allows Lorain High School students to obtain associate degrees through LCCC.
“I just have nothing but good things to say about early college,” he said. “I really think it’s a good program, and I hope you guys continue to stay with it.”
Rivera thanked her mother and the support of her family and teachers in helping her along the way in emphasizing academics.
On Nov. 1, Lorain Schools honored 45 scholars in a ceremony at Lorain High School as members of the “21 and Over Club” for their scores on the ACT exam.
By scoring 21 or higher, these scholars placed themselves in the national average among test takers across the country.
