PLAYER OF THE YEAR

- — Fuad Shalhout

Maeve Johnston Bay, Senior

Sometimes, a great goalkeeper will not even get tested in a game. Then there are the great goalkeepers that get tested multiple times a game and rises to the occasion. Maeve Johnston was the latter, particularly during Bay’s postseason run. Johnston, via brilliant saves game in and game out, carried the Rockets to a berth in the Division II state final. She made some of the most incredible saves you will see at the high school level, and some of those saves came at the most critical times. The words written here do not even do her performances justice, but Johnston ended the season with 245 saves — and that is while playing against six Division I teams during the regular season. She earned second team All-Ohio and was the catalyst of a run the Rockets will not soon forget.

COACH OF THE YEAR Matt Safar Olmsted Falls

The Olmsted Falls Bulldogs had a magical season, clinching their first-ever Southwestern Conference title and advancing to a Division I district final. The Bulldogs went 15-2-1(8-0-1 SWC) and Safar pushed all the right buttons, leading his team to play consistently from start to finish. He helped produce two All-Ohio athletes in goalkeeper Mackenzie Simon and forward Jordan Fusco.
